Doctors are cautiously hopeful about Liam’s first heart surgery. The procedure took 4+ hours to complete and they were able to place the shunt in the area of the heart that should now allow more blood flow to the lungs. They also placed a band around the pulmonary artery so there is just the right balance of blood going to the lungs. There were a few complications with Liam’s oxygen levels early on in the procedure so he had to be put on bypass and required blood products and plasma. The surgeon was also very surprised at how unique his heart anatomy is once they began operating, which will pose a challenge in the next procedure; the plan is to perform his next open heart procedure at 3-4 months of age, followed by a third procedure at 2 years of age.
He’s in recovery now and the next 48 hours are the most critical to see how his heart and lungs handle the new circulation. We can’t thank you enough for all the prayers and messages of hope. I will provide the next update very soon on how Liam’s recovery is going.
